Meet Bao Li & Qing Bao: National Zoo’s New Giant Pandas!

Excitement fills the air at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute as giant pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao make their long-awaited public debut. These adorable pandas, both 3 years old, are stepping into the spotlight just in time for the Lunar New Year celebrations.

The pandas arrived in the U.S. on October 15, 2024, from China. After their quarantine, Bao Li and Qing Bao spent several weeks acclimating to their new home. From January 10 to 19, National Zoo members had an exclusive chance to preview the pandas, but now, fans can see them live for free.

Catch the Pandas on the Relaunched Giant Panda Cam

For those who can’t make it to the zoo, the newly relaunched Giant Panda Cam is the perfect alternative. The cam features 40 live cameras that broadcast the pandas’ activities from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. ET. Fans from all over the world can now watch Bao Li and Qing Bao enjoy their bamboo, play with toys, and explore their exhibit.

Bao Li and Qing Bao’s Journey to the National Zoo

The two pandas were flown to Washington, D.C., as part of the Smithsonian’s ongoing giant panda conservation program. The public debut marks a significant milestone in the zoo’s mission to protect this endangered species. The pandas have already captured the hearts of staff and volunteers, and now they’re ready to share their charm with the public.

“We are thrilled to welcome Bao Li and Qing Bao,” said Brandie Smith, the Director of the National Zoo. “This is an exciting new chapter in our giant panda breeding and conservation efforts. The public can now witness these magnificent creatures up close and personal, the only place in the country where you can see them for free.”

Pandas Thriving at Their New Home

The pandas have settled into their new environment and are thriving. Zookeeper Mariel Lally commented on their playful nature, saying, “They’re very active, fun to watch, and obviously super cute.”

Fans can visit Bao Li and Qing Bao at the zoo or enjoy the relaunch of the Giant Panda Cam. This is the perfect opportunity to learn more about these lovable creatures and their role in global conservation efforts.
