IRS Stimulus Check Update: How to Claim Before the April 15

IRS stimulus check

Time is running out for taxpayers to claim their IRS stimulus check through the Recovery Rebate Credit. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has issued a final reminder for individuals who missed out on their 2021 stimulus checks to act fast before the April 15, 2025 deadline.

Who’s Eligible for the Stimulus Check?

The Recovery Rebate Credit is available to those who:

  • Did not receive one or more Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) in 2021
  • Did not claim the credit on their 2021 tax return
  • File their 2021 tax return by April 15, 2025

Even individuals with little or no income may qualify for a refund. You don’t need to owe taxes to get this money.

How Much Can You Receive?

Eligible taxpayers may receive up to $1,400 per person depending on income and filing status. The IRS estimates more than $2.4 billion in total payments are still unclaimed.

Automatic Payments Sent in Early 2025

In December 2024, the IRS stimulus check process was automated for many. If you were eligible and previously filed your 2023 tax return but missed the Recovery Rebate Credit for 2021, the IRS sent payments by January 2025.

  • Payments were sent to the bank or address listed on the 2023 return
  • If the bank account was closed, refunds were mailed to the last known address
  • Recipients also received an IRS letter confirming the payment

What You Need to Do Now

If you haven’t filed your 2021 tax return, there’s still time. You must file before April 15, 2025 to be eligible for the credit.

Even if you didn’t earn any income, you should still file. This is your last chance to claim what’s yours.
