Heathrow Airport closure: A major power loss from a nearby substation fire has temporarily shut down one of the world’s busiest airports.
To protect the safety of passengers and employees, officials said the shutdown will remain in place until 11:59 PM on March 21. For more information, travelers are advised to call their airlines and stay away from the airport.
Power Outage Causes Widespread Disruption
The fire broke out at the North Hyde substation in Hayes, West London, prompting the London Fire Brigade to respond with 10 fire engines and 70 firefighters. Despite hours of effort, parts of the transformer remained alight. Authorities reported that over 16,000 homes and businesses in the area were impacted.
Heathrow’s operations remain suspended, with flight diversions to alternative airports like Paris, Shannon, and other European hubs. Some U.S.-bound flights even turned around mid-air.
Passenger Impact and Safety Measures
Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne of the London Fire Brigade confirmed the evacuation of 150 people near the fire zone. Nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the thick smoke.
Travelers have been notified by the airport that every attempt is being made to safely resume operations. However, problems are anticipated to continue long after the reopening.
What Happens Next?
An investigation is underway, but the cause of the fire has not yet been identified. Authorities will provide further details on the area’s reopening date once everything is under control.
Passengers should monitor updates from Heathrow Airport and their respective carriers for the latest information.
