Apple’s WWDC 2025: A Subdued Comeback Amid AI Delays and Trade Pressures

Apple attempted to alter the mood at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2025) on Monday by revealing “Liquid Glass,” a complete software overhaul for the iPhone, and small AI improvements. But the event happened amid slow AI development, postponed Siri upgrades, and heightened trade pressure from President Donald Trump’s government.

The company’s cautious approach was seen by some analysts as underwhelming—especially as rivals like Google, Samsung, and Nvidia sprint ahead in artificial intelligence.

Redesign Over Revolution: Meet iOS 26 and Liquid Glass

Breaking from years of incremental changes, Apple introduced iOS 26, the first major visual overhaul of iPhone software in a decade. The new “Liquid Glass” design features sleeker icons, translucent layers, and more fluid animations. It reflects Apple’s shift to naming iOS versions by year, similar to the auto industry.

Also announced were enhancements to video gaming hubs and a new Workout Buddy, part of Apple’s push to make its ecosystem more interactive and seamless across devices.

The Siri Silence: AI Dreams Deferred

Despite AI being a headline from last year’s WWDC, Apple made little noise around Siri in 2025. Executives admitted that the promised AI-enhanced Siri is still not ready and won’t launch until at least 2026.

Critics say the delay marks a growing gap between Apple and leaders like Google and OpenAI. “The silence surrounding Siri was deafening,” said analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee. Apple’s once-groundbreaking virtual assistant now risks falling behind completely.

The AI Race: Apple Still in the Rearview

Apple’s AI rollout continues to lag as Pixel phones from Google and Samsung Galaxy devices pile on smarter, faster features. Even more concerning: OpenAI is now collaborating with ex-Apple design legend Jony Ive on a mystery AI device poised to rival the iPhone.

Monday’s showcase felt like a company playing catch-up, not leading the charge.

Trump’s tariffs and stock market woes

As if the technological difficulties weren’t enough, Apple is also facing political and economic pressure. Its shares dropped 20% in 2025, wiping down $750 billion in shareholder wealth.Previously the world’s most valuable company, Apple today trails Microsoft and Nvidia.

Apple is under increasing pressure to move more of its production to the US as a result of the additional tariff issues it is dealing with during Trump’s second term. Unlike in his first term, Cook has struggled to secure iPhone exemptions.

The Verdict: Apple Continues to Be Targeted

Instead of bold innovation, WWDC 2025 concentrated on positioning, calibrating, and refinement. Apple’s economic shortcomings and sluggish AI game will continue to be concerns, even if iOS 26 and its new features improve the Apple environment.

The main question remains: Can Apple reclaim its status as the leader in tech trends, or will it continue to play it safe while others advance?
