Big Lots reopening stores in May 2025, with 132 locations set to open across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Southeast. This follows Variety Wholesalers’ acquisition of the business earlier this year. The Big Lots brand will still be used by the stores, but the products they sell will vary significantly.
What’s Changing at Big Lots?
As part of the store’s transformation, Big Lots will no longer offer perishable food items. The focus will shift to providing discounted brand-name merchandise, including a greatly expanded apparel selection. The revamped stores will emphasize a treasure-hunt shopping experience for customers, offering high-quality products at affordable prices.
The first wave of reopenings will occur in two phases: 54 stores on May 1, and the remaining locations on May 15. While perishables will be removed from the shelves, a range of shelf-stable groceries, snacks, and beverages will still be available.

What Does the Future Hold for Big Lots?
Big Lots intends to provide a wider range of reasonably priced family clothing, kitchen necessities, and home products with the reopening of these locations. Reviving the Big Lots brand and carrying on its tradition of providing value to consumers nationwide are the goals of this strategic change.
The reopening of 132 stores marks a major milestone for Variety Wholesalers, which took control of the Big Lots stores after the company filed for bankruptcy. Additional reopenings are expected in June as the retailer continues to expand its reach.
