Human remains have been discovered inside a car belonging to Karen Schepers, a woman who disappeared more than 42 years ago. The 1980 Toyota Celica was recovered from the Fox River on Tuesday by a search team using sonar technology.

Schepers, an Elgin, Illinois resident, vanished in April 1983 after attending a work party. Despite years of investigation, no traces of her or her vehicle were found until now.

The Discovery of Karen Schepers’ Car

Nonprofit search group Chaos Divers located the vehicle near the Slade Avenue boat launch. Elgin Police Chief Ana Lalley confirmed the identification of the car through its license plate.

The car was removed from the water and transported to a secure facility for further examination. Skeletal remains found inside will undergo DNA testing to determine if they belong to Karen Schepers.

Family’s Reaction

Karen’s brother, Gary Schepers, expressed a mix of sorrow and relief, noting the discovery leaves the family with more questions than answers.

“It adds questions more than it answers them,” Gary said.

The emotional weight of the discovery was further felt by Karen’s 90-year-old mother, Elizabeth Paulson, who had been waiting decades for closure.
