Two beloved therapy dogs, Leica and Chevy, have officially retired after nearly a decade of service at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Their years of bringing joy, comfort, and love to young patients were honored with an emotional and heartwarming farewell party

Emotional Goodbye for Therapy Dogs

  •  On February 5, 2025, hospital employees, visitors, and local media came together to celebrate the two therapy dogs’ retirement and say goodbye with love. 
  •  Staff and patients showered Leica and Chevy, two 10-year-old golden retriever-lab-poodle mixes, with affection and affection. Many more shared touching stories of how the dogs changed their lives.
  • Because of the tremendous impact the dogs had on the lives of patients and medical personnel, Leica’s handler, Kerri Birkett, said the parting was heartbreaking.

A Joyous Celebration for the Pups

Even though it was a painful parting, the canines’ hard work and dedication were celebrated. According to hospital spokesperson Eric DeFreeuw, “Whenever they get together, it’s just like chaos,” describing the atmosphere of the gathering.

Despite not being siblings, Leica and Chevy had an unshakable friendship and spent their big day playing and falling together.

Years of Service at Cincinnati Children’s

  • In February 2016, Leica started collaborating with adapted care and outpatient teams.
  •  In November 2016, Chevy visited the Burnet Campus to comfort hospitalized patients.
  •  Katie Bradford, Chevy’s handler, reflected on how the dog’s warmth and companionship helped build lasting relationships with both critically ill and chronic patients.

Bringing Normalcy to Hospital Life

  • Children who experienced challenging hospital stays felt more normal because of Leica and Chevy. 
  •  “It was amazing to bring joy into an environment that isn’t normal,” Katie Bradford said. 
  •  Their presence improved the quality and manageability of hospital stays by reducing the emotional anguish experienced by patients and their families.

Retirement Plans for Leica and Chevy

Now that their service is finished, Leica and Chevy are ready to enjoy a loving, peaceful, and fun retirement.

Leica’s Plans:

  • Walks
  • Naps
  • Squeaky toys
  • Representing the health system as an ambassador

Chevy’s Plans:

  • Backyard naps
  • Belly rubs
  • Stuffed animals
  • Visiting friends as an official ambassador

Leica officially retired in December 2024, while Chevy finished his service in February 2025.

Long-Term Effects

Leica and Chevy will continue to make an effect even after they depart Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Their unwavering dedication throughout the years has brought comfort, joy, and healing to numerous kids, families, and employees.  Their story demonstrates the advantages of therapy dogs and the long-lasting bonds they foster.
